These changes redirect oxygen-rich blood primarily to the brain and heart, organs that are highly sensitive to oxygen deprivation.

Diving ducks possess enhanced oxygen storage capacities. They have higher concentrations of hemoglobin in their blood and myoglobin in their muscles, which stores oxygen for muscle activity during dives. This increased oxygen reserve, coupled with a reduced metabolic rate underwater, allows them to efficiently utilize stored oxygen and tolerate low oxygen periods. Ducks also compress their feathers before diving, squeezing out trapped air to reduce buoyancy and ease submersion.

What Influences Dive Duration

Several factors can influence how long a duck remains submerged. Species differences play a role, with diving ducks naturally capable of longer and deeper dives compared to dabbling ducks, which feed by tipping their heads in shallow water. The activity level during the dive also affects duration; active foraging for mobile prey may result in shorter dives compared to more passive hiding or searching for stationary food.
