How Long After Dysport Can You Work Out?

Most providers recommend waiting at least 24 hours after Dysport injections before doing any strenuous exercise. For the first 4 hours, you should avoid even moderate activity, bending over, or lying down. Light walking and normal daily tasks are fine right away.

That said, the traditional post-injection rules may be more cautious than strictly necessary. A large retrospective study of 5,000 patients found that skipping extended post-treatment restrictions entirely had no negative impact on satisfaction or complication rates. Still, most clinics err on the side of caution, and the 24-hour guideline remains standard advice.

The 4-Hour and 24-Hour Windows

Think of the first day after Dysport in two phases. During the first 4 hours, the neurotoxin is binding to nerve endings at the injection site. Increased blood flow, changes in head position, or pressure on the treated area could theoretically push the product away from where it was placed. That’s why clinics advise staying upright, skipping moderate exercise like brisk walking or swimming, and avoiding touching or pressing on your face during this window.

After 4 hours, moderate activities like a brisk walk become reasonable for most people. But strenuous exercise, anything that significantly raises your heart rate or involves heavy exertion, is best saved for the 24-hour mark. Some providers extend that recommendation to 48 hours, particularly for activities that involve heat exposure or intense cardiovascular effort.

Which Workouts to Avoid

The concern isn’t just about sweating. Certain movements and positions carry specific risks in the hours after injection:

  • Weightlifting and heavy lifting: Straining increases blood pressure and facial pressure, raising the risk of bruising and swelling at injection sites.
  • Running, cycling, and intense cardio: Elevated heart rate increases circulation throughout the face, which could spread the product beyond the targeted muscles.
  • Yoga and Pilates: Inverted positions like Downward Dog put your head below your heart. Even in low-impact workouts, these head-down poses are among the most commonly flagged movements to avoid.
  • Hot yoga, saunas, and outdoor workouts in extreme heat: Heat dilates blood vessels and further increases the chance of swelling and migration. Avoid these for at least 24 to 48 hours.
  • Contact sports: Any impact to the treated area risks displacing the product and worsening bruising.
  • Activities requiring restrictive headgear or gear that presses on your face: Even wiping sweat aggressively from your forehead can apply unwanted pressure to injection sites.

What You Can Do Right Away

Gentle walking, light housework, and normal daily activities are all fine immediately after your appointment. Some providers also encourage gentle facial exercises in the treated area, which may help the neurotoxin settle into the targeted muscles. The key distinction is intensity: if it doesn’t raise your heart rate or require you to bend over, lie flat, or press on your face, it’s generally safe.

Why the Rules May Be Overly Cautious

A study published in the journal Toxins examined outcomes in 5,000 patients who received no post-treatment restrictions at all. They were observed for 10 minutes after injection, then sent home to resume normal activities immediately. Among the 4,000 patients evaluated at follow-up, zero cases of upper eyelid drooping were recorded, and complication rates were no higher than expected. The researchers concluded that the neurotoxin binds to nerve endings quickly enough that extended behavioral restrictions “may be redundant.”

This doesn’t mean you should ignore your provider’s instructions. But it does suggest that if you accidentally went for a jog 2 hours after your appointment, the odds of a meaningful problem are low. The 24-hour guideline is a conservative buffer, not a hard biological cutoff.

What to Watch for If You Exercised Too Soon

If you worked out sooner than recommended, keep an eye on the treated area over the following days. The two main concerns are uneven results and localized side effects. Uneven results would show up as asymmetry or less smoothing than expected once the Dysport takes full effect, typically within 2 to 7 days. Localized side effects include increased bruising, swelling, or in rare cases, drooping of the eyelid or brow if the product migrated from a forehead injection.

Most people who exercise a bit too early notice no difference in their results. If you do see unexpected drooping or significant asymmetry, contact the clinic that performed your treatment. These effects are temporary and resolve as the neurotoxin wears off, but your provider may want to adjust your next session’s technique or dosing.
