You should wait at least four hours after Dysport injections before lying down flat. This is the standard recommendation from dermatologists and cosmetic injectors, and it applies whether you’re taking a nap, going to bed for the night, or just stretching out on the couch. The goal is to keep the product where it was placed so it settles into the correct muscles.
Why Four Hours Matters
Dysport works by blocking the nerve signals that tell certain facial muscles to contract. After injection, the product needs time to bind to those nerve endings. During the first few hours, the toxin hasn’t fully attached yet, which means it can still shift from the intended treatment area into neighboring muscles.
Lying flat changes the way pressure is distributed across your face. If you press your forehead into a pillow or spend time face-down, you risk pushing the product away from where your injector placed it. Staying upright for four hours gives the toxin enough time to anchor in place, reducing the chance of unwanted spread.
What Can Go Wrong
The most commonly cited risk of lying down too early is eyelid drooping, known clinically as ptosis. When Dysport is injected into the forehead or between the brows, premature reclining could allow the product to drift toward the small muscles that hold your eyelids open. The result is a heavy or droopy eyelid that can take weeks to resolve on its own.
That said, the actual risk of significant migration from lying down is considered minimal by most practitioners. Several factors influence how much a botulinum toxin spreads, including the dose, the volume injected, and the concentration of the solution. Dysport has a slightly broader diffusion pattern than some other neurotoxins, which is one reason providers are particularly cautious about post-treatment positioning with this product. The four-hour rule is a simple precaution that stacks the odds in your favor.
Reclining vs. Lying Flat
There’s a meaningful difference between reclining at an angle and lying completely flat. Sitting in a reclined position, like leaning back in a recliner or propping yourself up with pillows at roughly 45 degrees, is generally considered acceptable during the four-hour window. What you want to avoid is being fully horizontal, especially face-down.
If your Dysport appointment is in the evening and you’re worried about staying up late enough, schedule it earlier in the day. Most people find it easiest to get their injections in the morning or early afternoon so the four-hour window passes well before bedtime.
Your First Night of Sleep
When you do go to bed on the night of your treatment, sleeping on your back is the safest position. This keeps consistent, even pressure off the injection sites. Side sleeping is less ideal because it presses one side of your face into the pillow, but it’s unlikely to cause problems once you’re past the four-hour mark.
For the first 24 hours after treatment, avoid anything that puts direct pressure on your face. That includes face-down massage tables, chiropractor face cradles, and facial cleansing devices that press against the skin. These create localized pressure that could still influence how the product distributes in the tissue, even after the initial settling period.
Other Aftercare for the First Day
The four-hour upright rule is the most important timing guideline, but a few other precautions apply during the first 24 hours:
- Skip intense exercise. Heavy workouts increase blood flow to the face and raise your body temperature, both of which can accelerate the spread of the toxin beyond the target area. Light walking is fine.
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the area. Touching, pressing, or kneading the injection sites can physically push the product into adjacent muscles.
- Stay away from excessive heat. Saunas, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure can increase circulation to the treated area in the same way exercise does.
Dysport typically begins to take effect within two to three days, with full results visible around two weeks after treatment. The product’s effects last roughly three to four months for most people. Following the aftercare guidelines, especially during those critical first four hours, helps ensure the results look the way you and your injector planned.
