A period is generally considered “late” if it significantly deviates from an individual’s usual pattern or exceeds the expected duration of a typical cycle. For example, if your cycle is consistently 28 days, a period arriving on day 35 would be considered a significant delay.
Common Reasons for a Delayed Period

The thyroid gland produces hormones that influence many bodily functions, including metabolism and reproductive processes. Perimenopause, the natural transition phase leading to menopause, often involves irregular periods as the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. During this time, menstrual cycles can become longer or shorter, and periods may be missed entirely. Less common conditions, such as premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) or pituitary tumors, can also affect cycle timing by disrupting hormone production and ovulation.

These include severe pain, unusually heavy bleeding, large blood clots, or bleeding between periods. Other concerning signs are sudden or unexplained weight changes, excessive hair growth, persistent acne, prolonged fatigue, or symptoms suggestive of an ectopic pregnancy.
