Phalaenopsis orchids are classified as warm-growing and thrive in the same temperature range humans find comfortable, generally between 65°F and 80°F. Unlike many orchids that require a significant cool-down period to set buds, the Phalaenopsis is more adaptable to a consistent indoor climate. Their long-lasting blooms can persist for up to three months, providing a substantial reward for minimal effort.
Another excellent choice for the home environment is the Paphiopedilum, or Slipper Orchid, favored for its tolerance of low to medium indirect light. These plants are often categorized as terrestrial orchids, meaning they grow in the humus layer of the forest floor, making their care feel slightly more intuitive to traditional gardeners. Paphiopedilums prefer their potting medium to remain consistently moist, but not soggy, which is a subtle difference from the dry-out period required by many other types.
Cattleya hybrids, known as the corsage orchid, are another popular beginner option, although they require slightly brighter light than a Phalaenopsis. These orchids have evolved thickened stems called pseudobulbs that function as water storage units.
