Humpback whales are large, migratory marine mammals known for their distinctive body shapes and acrobatic behaviors. Variations in Humpback Whale Speed
Humpback whales exhibit a range of speeds depending on their activity, from leisurely cruising to rapid bursts. Some migration speeds can be as low as 2.7 to 4.7 kilometers per hour (1.7-2.9 mph).

When actively foraging, their speed significantly decreases, often slowing to about 1.9 to 5.6 kilometers per hour (1.2-3.5 mph) to efficiently capture prey. Humpback whales possess exceptionally long pectoral fins, measuring up to one-third of their body length. These long fins are used for steering, maintaining stability, and increasing maneuverability. Their leading edges feature irregular bumps called tubercles, which enhance hydrodynamic efficiency by reducing drag and increasing lift, even at low speeds.
