Thyme is a highly fragrant and popular Mediterranean herb valued for its culinary uses and attractive, often drought-tolerant nature. Proper spacing is fundamental for successful cultivation. Adequate room supports the plant’s bushy, mature size and maintains sufficient air circulation. Overcrowding creates a humid microclimate, which increases the risk of fungal problems such as powdery mildew.

Standard Spacing for Culinary and Upright Thyme

Culinary varieties of thyme, such as English, French, or Common Thyme, develop an upright, bushy growth habit. These plants grow into a small, dome-shaped sub-shrub that requires room to expand. The ideal planting distance is typically 12 to 18 inches between individual plants. Allowing a minimum of 12 inches between centers is important for promoting airflow around the foliage and stems. Proper spacing helps the leaves dry quickly after watering or rain, minimizing the chance of fungal disease development.

Adjusting Spacing for Creeping and Groundcover Thyme

Groundcover varieties, like Creeping Thyme, are low-growing and mat-forming. They are primarily used to fill in spaces between pavers, on slopes, or as lawn alternatives. The required spacing depends on the desired rate of coverage. If the goal is to achieve a rapid, dense carpet of foliage, plants can be placed 6 to 8 inches apart. This closer arrangement allows the trailing stems to quickly merge and root, creating a solid mat within two growing seasons. For a less dense, slow-merging effect, the standard 12-inch spacing is appropriate.

Initial Spacing When Planting From Seed

Starting thyme from seeds requires a different initial approach than planting transplants. The seeds are sown densely on the soil surface, as they require light for germination and should only be covered with a very thin layer of fine soil or vermiculite. This dense initial sowing results in a crowded bed of tiny seedlings that must be addressed promptly.

The process of thinning should begin once the young plants develop their first set of true leaves and reach a height of approximately 2 to 3 inches. Thinning involves carefully removing the weaker or more crowded seedlings to leave the healthiest plants at the final, permanent spacing. To prevent root damage to the remaining seedlings, it is best to snip the unwanted plants at the soil line rather than pulling them out of the ground.

Maintaining Space Through Pruning and Thinning

Once thyme plants are established at their correct spacing, ongoing maintenance is necessary to preserve the plant’s shape and the vital air gaps between them. Thyme is a semi-woody perennial that, if left unpruned, will develop thick, bare, and unproductive stems. Regular pruning encourages new, tender growth from the base and maintains a more compact, bushy habit.

Pruning should typically occur after the plant finishes its main flowering cycle in the summer. Remove no more than one-third of the plant’s total growth at any one time. This light annual trimming prevents the plant from encroaching on its neighbors and keeps the center of the plant open for air circulation. Cutting back into the hard, old, brown wood of an established plant should be avoided, as this wood often fails to re-sprout.
