These varieties feature large, dense, pom-pom-like flower heads. Their expansive size requires considerable room to develop their full structure without competing with neighbors.
French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) present a more compact and bushy form, typically growing between six and twelve inches tall and wide. Their blooms are generally smaller than African types, often displaying bi-colored patterns. These varieties are favored for edging, borders, and container gardening due to their manageable, mounding shape.
Signet Marigolds (Tagetes tenuifolia) are the most delicate type, characterized by slender stems and a low-growing, lacy appearance. These petite plants rarely exceed one foot in height and feature small, single flowers, often with a pleasant citrus scent. Their fine texture and low profile mean they require the least planting distance to achieve a full look.
Specific Planting Distance Guidelines
The precise distance between marigold plants is determined by the expected mature size of the specific cultivar. Spacing ranges from a tight grouping for the smallest varieties to a wide berth for the tallest. Providing the recommended space ensures each plant receives the resources needed to reach its potential.
African Marigolds, due to their substantial height and spread, should be spaced approximately 10 to 12 inches apart in a garden bed. For particularly vigorous cultivars, spacing up to 18 inches may be beneficial.
