Citronella compounds work through two primary methods to disrupt this host-seeking process. The first is a masking effect, where the dense cloud of volatile citronella molecules effectively jams the mosquito’s olfactory receptors. The second mechanism involves the citronella components acting as a direct irritant or deterrent. This direct activation of the TRPA1 channel acts as a warning signal, prompting the mosquito to avoid the area treated with the oil. The chemical signal is perceived as a direct deterrent that causes the insect to fly away. This dual-action mechanism—masking host cues and actively irritating the mosquito’s sensory neurons—is what gives citronella its repellent properties.
Application Methods and Repellency Duration
The performance of citronella oil depends on the application method, which influences how quickly the volatile compounds escape into the air. Topical application, such as oils, lotions, or sprays applied directly to the skin, provides the highest concentration of active compounds near the host. A limitation of citronella is its high volatility, meaning the active compounds evaporate rapidly from the skin surface.
This quick dissipation results in a short duration of protection compared to synthetic alternatives. For example, a 5% citronella oil formulation may provide repellency for less than two hours, with efficacy dropping sharply after the first hour. In contrast, synthetic repellents like DEET can maintain effectiveness for six hours or more.
Other application methods include passive diffusion devices like citronella candles, coils, and patches. While these products release the oil’s fragrance, they often create a low, diluted concentration of repellent in the air. When used outdoors, the volatile compounds are easily dispersed by a light breeze, making these ambient methods generally ineffective at providing consistent protection.
To address rapid evaporation, modern formulations incorporate delivery systems designed to slow the release of the oil.
