Jalapeño peppers require a long growing season to fully mature and produce fruit, making an early indoor start necessary for most climates. They need a head start indoors before the final spring frost. Gardeners should sow seeds six to eight weeks before the average date of the last expected frost in their region to ensure robust seedlings for transplanting.

Starting seeds indoors provides the necessary controlled environment and heat that these tropical plants demand. Direct sowing is generally not recommended unless you live in an area with a consistently long and hot growing season.
