The planting depth for garlic cloves balances winter protection and efficient growth, typically ranging from one to three inches of soil covering the top of the clove. This depth anchors the developing root system, resisting “heaving” caused by freeze-thaw cycles pushing shallowly planted cloves out of the ground during winter. In extremely cold regions or where mulch is not applied, planting closer to three inches offers greater insulation.
Planting deeper than three inches causes the emerging shoot to expend excess energy reaching the surface, diverting energy from future bulb development and potentially resulting in a smaller final product. Cloves should be spaced four to six inches apart in a row to allow sufficient room for a large bulb. Rows should be spaced 12 to 18 inches apart to ensure adequate air circulation and prevent competition for moisture and nutrients.
Preparing the Soil Environment
