Prairie dogs, highly social, burrowing rodents native to North American grasslands, are remarkable engineers of the underground world. Despite their name, these animals are a type of ground squirrel known for constructing extensive and intricate subterranean systems. Black-tailed prairie dog burrows commonly reach 3 to 6 feet, though some can extend up to 15 feet. In some cases, these subterranean structures have been recorded exceeding 30 feet. Horizontal tunnels branching from the main shafts can stretch much further, often spanning 15 to 35 feet in length.
Several environmental factors influence the depth and extent of these burrows. Prairie dogs prefer fine or medium-textured soils, such as silty loam clay, avoiding areas prone to collapsing or flooding. The water table level also plays a role, as burrows are designed to prevent water intrusion. Additionally, they adapt their burrow structure seasonally for ventilation in warmer months and warmth retention during colder periods.

A prairie dog burrow is a sophisticated network of tunnels and chambers, often described as an “underground city.” These elaborate systems feature multiple entrance and exit points, with as many as 50 burrow entrances found per acre. Each entrance includes a distinctive crater- or dome-shaped mound, up to 2 feet high and 10 feet in diameter. These mounds serve as elevated lookout stations, prevent water entry, and contribute to the system’s ventilation.
