Polar bears are adept swimmers and divers, though their diving behavior typically involves relatively shallow depths. One study recorded a maximum dive depth of 13.9 meters (45.6 feet), with dives exceeding 5 meters being common among some individuals. An extreme, though rare, recorded dive reached between 45 and 50 meters (147.6 and 164 feet).
Polar bears can typically remain submerged for up to two minutes. However, exceptional instances have documented dives lasting as long as 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Despite their diving abilities, their primary hunting methods often involve shallow, stealthy approaches or long surface swims, rather than prolonged deep dives. They are strong swimmers, capable of covering significant distances, with some individuals tracked swimming continuously for over 100 kilometers (62 miles).
Physical Adaptations for Underwater Living
Polar bears possess physical characteristics that facilitate their aquatic lifestyle. Their large, partially webbed front paws function as powerful paddles, propelling them efficiently through the water. The hind legs and feet are held flat and act as rudders, assisting with steering and stability during swimming.
A thick layer of blubber, up to 11 centimeters (4.5 inches) thick, provides crucial insulation against the frigid Arctic waters. This fatty layer also contributes significantly to their buoyancy, helping them conserve energy during long swims. Furthermore, polar bears have the ability to close their nostrils and flatten their ears when submerged, preventing water from entering. Their dense, water-repellent fur, composed of hollow hairs, offers additional insulation and aids in buoyancy, further enhancing their proficiency in icy environments.
Strategic Reasons for Deep Dives
Polar bears dive for practical purposes related to their survival and foraging within their Arctic habitat. A primary reason for their dives is hunting, particularly ambushing seals. They might submerge to approach seals undetected near breathing holes or under ice, bursting out of the water to surprise their prey.
Diving also serves as a means of travel, allowing polar bears to navigate between ice floes or cross open water expanses. This is relevant in a dynamic environment where sea ice conditions constantly change. Occasionally, they dive to access alternative food sources, such as kelp, submerged carcasses, blue mussels, or even seabirds. Additionally, submerging can be a tactic to evade perceived threats or to cool down their bodies after strenuous activity or on warmer days.
