Bald eagles serve as a national symbol, but visually distinguishing a male from a female presents a significant challenge. The species exhibits reverse sexual dimorphism, meaning the female is noticeably larger than the male. Despite this size difference, the sexes are nearly identical in appearance, making field identification difficult and often reliant on comparing two birds next to each other. Determining the sex of an isolated eagle requires precise measurements or advanced scientific techniques.

Physical Differences: Size and Scale

The most striking difference between male and female bald eagles is their size, with the female typically being about 25% larger and heavier than her mate. For instance, northern female eagles, particularly those in Alaska, can weigh over 14 pounds, while males in the same region average closer to 9 to 10 pounds.

This difference in mass also translates to wingspan and body length. The largest females sometimes boast wingspans approaching eight feet, while male wingspans generally top out around six feet. However, size alone is not a definitive identifier across the entire species range. Eagles in northern latitudes are larger than those found in the southern United States. Male and female bald eagles are considered monomorphic, meaning their plumage is exactly the same. Both sexes share the iconic dark brown body feathers, bright white head and tail, and yellow beak and feet as adults.

These measurements are typically taken by professionals using calipers and are used in statistical formulas to predict sex, as there is often some overlap between the largest males and the smallest females.
