Laboratories then analyze the DNA for specific genetic markers (like the Z and W chromosomes) that determine sex in birds. Another conclusive sign of a pigeon’s sex is the act of egg-laying. If a pigeon lays an egg, it is definitively a female. While this provides undeniable proof, it requires waiting for the bird to reach reproductive maturity and begin breeding, which may not always be practical.
