As hatching approaches, baby alligators begin to vocalize, making chirping or grunting sounds. These sounds signal to the mother that they are ready to emerge. To break out of their leathery shells, hatchlings use a specialized “egg tooth” on their snout. This temporary structure helps them pip and cut through the shell. The Mother’s Role
