African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs, are unique canids native to sub-Saharan Africa. African wild dogs possess a lean, athletic build. An adult African wild dog typically stands between 60 to 75 centimeters (24 to 30 inches) tall at the shoulder. Their body length, measured from head to the base of the tail, ranges from 71 to 112 centimeters (28 to 44 inches). The bushy tail adds an additional 29 to 41 centimeters (11 to 16 inches) to their overall length.
The weight of an adult African wild dog generally falls between 18 to 36 kilograms (40 to 79 pounds). Males are often slightly larger than females. Females are typically 3-7% smaller than males in body mass.
Unique Physical Traits
African wild dogs possess a slender, long-limbed body designed for endurance and speed. This allows them to cover vast distances efficiently during hunts.
Their most recognizable features include large, rounded ears, sometimes described as bat-like. These prominent ears enhance their hearing and also play a role in thermoregulation. Unlike most other canids, African wild dogs have only four toes on each foot, lacking dewclaws. This adaptation, along with fused middle toepads, contributes to their running efficiency.
The coat of an African wild dog is distinctive, featuring an irregular, mottled pattern of black, white, yellow, and brown patches. Each individual dog has a unique coat pattern, similar to a human fingerprint, which allows for individual identification. Their fur is short and sparse. A bushy tail, typically tipped with white, serves as a visual signal during pack movements and interactions.

The African wild dog is the largest wild canine species in Africa. Globally, it ranks as the second largest canid by body mass, surpassed only by the wolf species complex. Their build differs from many familiar domestic breeds.
Compared to a domestic dog like a German Shepherd, African wild dogs are roughly similar in size. However, they possess a leaner and taller frame, contrasting with the bulkier appearance of some domestic dog breeds. African wild dogs are smaller than wolves, which typically are 4 to 6 feet long and weigh 80 to 150 pounds. Despite this, African wild dogs are larger than coyotes, which average between 20 to 50 pounds.
