Ninebark size is primarily dictated by the cultivar’s genetics, which breeders have manipulated to create a range of sizes. The largest baseline is the straight species, Physocarpus opulifolius, which typically grows 5 to 9 feet tall with an arching spread of 4 to 6 feet. Robust varieties like ‘Diabolo’ can reach the upper limit of this range, sometimes touching 10 feet tall.
Medium-sized cultivars offer a more manageable profile for suburban gardens, generally maturing to 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Varieties such as ‘Summer Wine’ and ‘Amber Jubilee’ provide the signature colorful foliage and a full, rounded shape.
The most significant development has been the introduction of dwarf cultivars designed for smaller spaces, foundation plantings, or containers.
