Sweet Basil, including popular Genovese types, typically reaches a mature height of 18 to 24 inches with a comparable spread of 12 to 15 inches under optimal conditions. This robust size makes it a high-yielding choice, though it requires ample space.
Thai Basil, often distinguished by its purple stems and anise-like flavor, is generally more compact and upright. Mature plants usually grow to a height and width of 12 to 18 inches, creating a dense, shrub-like form.
For growers with limited space, the Dwarf or Bush varieties, such as Globe or Greek basil, offer the smallest scale. These cultivars form a tidy, rounded mound, with a mature height and spread restricted to 8 to 15 inches. Their compact size makes them ideal for container gardening and window boxes.
Environmental and Cultivation Influences on Growth
While genetics set the maximum potential size, external environmental factors heavily influence how close a basil plant comes to reaching those dimensions. Basil thrives in full sun, requiring a minimum of six to eight hours of direct light daily. Insufficient light will cause the plant to become “leggy,” growing tall but thin with sparse leaves as it stretches to find light.
