These creatures inhabit the dynamic swash zone, the area where waves continuously advance and retreat along the shoreline. Life Cycle and Longevity

Sand crabs exhibit a relatively short lifespan, typically ranging from two to three years. This brief existence necessitates rapid growth, which is achieved through a process called molting, or ecdysis. As sand crabs grow, their rigid exoskeleton cannot expand, so they must periodically shed their old outer shell to allow for an increase in size.

During molting, the crab absorbs water to swell, causing its old shell to crack. The crab then extracts itself from the old exoskeleton, including parts of its digestive tract and eyestalks, leaving it soft and vulnerable until the new shell hardens. This process is energy-intensive, and the crab often consumes its shed exoskeleton to reabsorb calcium and other minerals needed for the new shell.
