Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae), known for its euphoric effect on domestic felines. Native to Europe and Asia, this vigorous plant has become widely naturalized across North America, often growing in disturbed areas like roadsides and fields. A single plant can easily occupy a space up to 3 feet in diameter. The plant features erect, branched stems that are square in cross-section, a characteristic trait of the mint family.

The gray-green foliage is covered with fine, downy hairs, and the leaves are triangular to ovate with coarsely toothed edges. Small, white flowers with pale purple spotting bloom in spike-like terminal clusters. These flower spikes can extend the plant’s total height up to 4 feet. Catnip is a short-lived perennial that dies back to the ground each winter and regrows from the base in the spring.

Environmental Conditions That Affect Plant Size

The size of an individual catnip plant depends highly on the amount of sunlight it receives. Plants placed in full sun (six to eight hours of direct light daily) are the most vigorous and develop dense, bushy growth. Catnip grown in partial shade often becomes leggy, resulting in fewer leaves and a sprawling, less compact structure as it stretches for light.
