While most pet axolotls fall within the 23-30 cm range, some exceptional individuals have been recorded reaching up to 47 cm (18.5 inches), with rare reports of up to 21 inches (53 cm).

Axolotls exhibit rapid growth during their early stages, transforming from less than a centimeter long hatchlings. A well-fed axolotl can grow approximately one centimeter per week, reaching about 7 cm (3 inches) by three months of age. Growth gradually slows as they mature, typically reaching sexual maturity around 18 to 27 months. Most axolotls attain their full adult size by approximately two years of age.

Factors Influencing Growth

An axolotl’s ultimate size is shaped by genetic and environmental factors. Genetics play an inherent role, predisposing individuals to a certain growth potential; some are naturally larger or smaller. Conditions like dwarfism or “mini” axolotls, resulting in smaller adults, are attributed to genetic factors.

Diet is another important factor; a high-quality, protein-rich diet is essential for healthy development. Axolotls are carnivores, thriving on foods like earthworms, bloodworms, and daphnia. Size and Care Considerations

Selecting an appropriately sized tank is important for an axolotl’s health and comfort. A 20-gallon long tank is often recommended as a good starting point. Axolotls are bottom-dwellers, so longer, wider tanks are more suitable than tall, narrow ones.

Providing hiding spots and appropriate filtration are important care considerations. Axolotls benefit from places to retreat, such as caves, rocks, and plants, which reduce stress. Decorations should not have sharp edges that could injure them.
