Tuna are powerful, fast-swimming predatory fish found throughout the world’s oceans. Their size varies considerably depending on the specific species. Tuna are apex predators, and their streamlined bodies allow them to thrive as efficient hunters in diverse aquatic environments.

The Giants: Bluefin Tuna

Among tuna species, the Atlantic Bluefin tuna is the largest. Fully mature adults typically measure 2 to 2.5 meters (6.6 to 8.2 feet) in length and weigh 225 to 250 kilograms (496 to 551 pounds). These powerful fish possess a torpedo-shaped body, designed for speed and endurance, allowing them to traverse vast oceanic distances.

Maximum recorded sizes for Atlantic Bluefin include individuals reaching 4.6 meters (15 feet) and weights approaching 907 kilograms (2,000 pounds). Ken Fraser caught a record 1,496-pound (679 kg) bluefin off Nova Scotia in 1979, a record that has stood for decades. Their substantial size is supported by a long lifespan, with Atlantic Bluefin tuna capable of living for 15 to 30 years, and some even reaching 40 to 50 years.

Other Major Tuna Species and Their Sizes

Yellowfin Tuna

They can reach lengths of up to 1.4 meters (4 feet 7 inches) and weigh up to 40 kilograms (88 pounds). Common catches are often between 50 to 90 centimeters (20 to 35 inches) and 3 to 22 kilograms (7 to 48 pounds). Albacore live for about 10 to 12 years, and their diet primarily consists of cephalopods.

Skipjack Tuna

The Skipjack tuna is the smallest and most abundant of the commercially important species. They commonly reach lengths of 60 to 90 centimeters (2 to 3 feet) and weigh around 9 kilograms (20 pounds). The maximum recorded size for a Skipjack is about 1.1 meters (3.7 feet) and 34.5 kilograms (76 pounds). Characterized by four to six dark bands on their silvery belly, Skipjack have a relatively short lifespan of 8 to 12 years.

Bigeye Tuna

Bigeye tuna are comparable in size to Yellowfin, capable of growing up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) long and exceeding 200 kilograms (440 pounds), with some reaching up to 210 kg (460 pounds). Their large eyes are an adaptation for foraging in deeper, cooler waters. Bigeye tuna can live up to 15 years and are often found in schools, sometimes alongside juvenile Yellowfin and Skipjack.
