Polar bears are known for their impressive size. While adults are among the largest land predators, their offspring begin life remarkably small and vulnerable. The journey from tiny newborn to massive adult involves rapid, significant transformation through various developmental stages. This growth trajectory highlights the adaptations that allow these animals to thrive in their challenging environment.

Tiny Beginnings

Polar bear cubs are typically born in maternity dens, dug into snowbanks, between November and January. At birth, newborns are surprisingly small and helpless, weighing around 454 to 680 grams (16-24 ounces). Their length is approximately 30-35 centimeters (12-14 inches).

These miniature cubs are born with their eyes closed and are toothless. Their soft fur is not as developed as an adult’s, making them appear almost hairless and highly dependent on their mother for warmth and survival during their earliest weeks.

Growth in the Den and Beyond

During their time in the maternity den, polar bear cubs undergo intense growth and development. Within the first month, their eyes open. By approximately two months of age, their bodies have developed thicker, whitish fur, and their teeth begin to emerge, allowing them to start walking within the den.

The cubs’ rapid growth is fueled by their mother’s exceptionally rich milk, which contains about 31-33% fat. This nutrient-dense milk allows them to gain weight quickly; by three months old, they can weigh 10 to 15 kilograms (22-33 pounds), an increase of approximately 20 times their birth weight. When the mother and cubs emerge from the den in late March or April, the cubs are significantly larger and more developed. They typically remain near the den for several days or weeks, acclimating to the colder air and strengthening their muscles before venturing into the Arctic.

Journey to Adulthood

After leaving the den, polar bear cubs continue their substantial growth, learning essential survival skills from their mother. While still nursing, they begin to sample solid food, such as seal meat, after their mother’s first kill on the sea ice. Cubs typically nurse for 20 to 30 months. By eight months of age, their weight can exceed 45 kilograms (99 pounds).

Cubs generally remain with their mother for two to three years, or longer, learning to hunt, swim, and navigate their harsh environment. They may attempt hunting in their first year but are usually not successful until over one year old. Once separated from their mother, they are considered subadults, a stage lasting until they are mature enough to reproduce. Females typically reach reproductive maturity between four and six years of age, while males mature later, from six to ten years. By two years old, male cubs can sometimes be as large as their mothers, weighing hundreds of pounds.

What Shapes Their Size

Several factors influence the growth and eventual size of polar bear cubs. The mother’s health and nutritional status before and during denning are crucial. Pregnant females need to gain significant fat, sometimes over 200 kilograms (441 pounds), to sustain themselves and their cubs during months in the den without eating. A mother in good condition produces richer milk and supports more robust cub growth.

Litter size also plays a role; mothers typically give birth to one to three cubs, with twins being most common. Larger litters can place more demands on the mother’s resources, influencing individual cub growth. Food availability, primarily seals, is essential for the mother to regain strength and provide for her cubs after leaving the den. Environmental conditions, such as sea ice stability and extent, directly impact the mother’s hunting ability, affecting nutritional intake for cub development.
