The typical size of an adult King Salmon can vary by region and individual fish. Most adults generally measure between 24 to 36 inches (61 to 91 cm) in length. Their weight commonly ranges from 10 to 50 pounds (4.5 to 22.7 kg), though some sources indicate an average closer to 20 or 30 pounds.
Record-Breaking King Salmon
While average sizes are substantial, some King Salmon grow to truly exceptional proportions. The current International Game Fish Association (IGFA) all-tackle world record for a sport-caught King Salmon stands at 97 pounds, 4 ounces. This remarkable fish was caught by Les Anderson in the Kenai River, Alaska, in May 1985. Its length was nearly 5 feet, with a girth of 37.5 inches.
Fish of this magnitude are rare. While commercial catches have occasionally landed even larger specimens, such as a 126-pound King Salmon caught in a fish trap in 1949, the sport fishing record remains a testament to what an angler can achieve.
Factors Influencing King Salmon Size
Several biological and environmental factors contribute to the varied sizes observed in King Salmon populations. The age of the fish is a primary determinant, as older salmon generally attain greater sizes. King Salmon can spend anywhere from one to eight years in the ocean before returning to their freshwater spawning grounds, with typical ocean residency lasting three to four years.
