Guava trees propagated from cuttings or air-layering often exhibit a shallower root system. This shallower network still provides extensive anchorage, enabling mature guava trees to withstand strong winds.
Guava Root Depth and Spread
The depth and spread of guava roots are influenced by propagation method, age, soil type, and water availability. Guava trees grown from cuttings or air-layering have most roots concentrated within 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) of the soil surface. Roots of mature guava trees can spread significantly, often extending beyond the drip line of the tree’s canopy.

Root binding occurs when guava trees are grown in containers too small for an extended period, leading to a compacted mass of roots. Signs include stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and poor fruiting. To address this, repotting the tree into a larger container or carefully loosening and spreading the roots before planting can help.
Nematodes, microscopic roundworms, can also attack guava roots, leading to symptoms like stunting, wilting, and yellowing leaves. Mulching and proper fertilization can help mitigate their effects.
