Most transparent TPU products use aromatic isocyanates, such as MDI, which contain a benzene ring structure. This structure is susceptible to absorbing UV light, which breaks molecular bonds and generates highly reactive free radicals.
These free radicals react with oxygen, leading to a chain reaction that forms new chemical structures called chromophores. Chromophores are chemical groups that absorb visible light, causing the material to appear yellow or brown. Specifically, the oxidation of the methylene bridge within the MDI structure forms conjugated systems like quinones, which create the distinct yellowish hue.
Thermal energy and environmental chemicals also accelerate this degradation. High temperatures speed up the oxidation process, meaning a phone case left in a hot car will yellow significantly faster than one kept cool. Chemicals found in human sweat, skin oils, lotions, and air pollutants interact with the TPU surface, contributing to discoloration. Yellowing-resistant products often utilize aliphatic TPU, which lacks the problematic benzene ring structure and is more stable against UV light.

Consumers can take proactive steps to significantly delay the yellowing of aromatic TPU. Since UV light is the main catalyst, minimizing direct sun exposure is the most effective preventative measure. Avoid leaving items like phone cases on sun-drenched car dashboards or near bright windows for extended periods.
Heat is another accelerating factor, so users should try to keep TPU items away from high-temperature environments. The storage environment should be cool and ventilated, as excessive heat speeds up the chemical reactions that form the yellow chromophores. Regular maintenance is also beneficial, involving cleaning the surface with a mild, pH-neutral soap and a soft cloth. This routine removes accumulated oils, sweat, and environmental contaminants that hasten degradation.
The Reality of Reversing Discoloration
The ability to restore a yellowed TPU product depends entirely on the cause of the discoloration. If the yellowing is due to surface grime, oils, or temporary stains, a thorough cleaning can often reverse the effect. However, if the material has undergone chemical yellowing from photo-oxidation, the change is considered permanent and irreversible.
This permanence occurs because the yellow color is a result of a fundamental change to the polymer’s molecular structure, not just a surface stain.
