Maintaining proper posture while sitting helps, but the most impactful strategy involves frequent, short interruptions. If you must remain seated, try elevating your feet slightly with a footrest to adjust the angle of your pelvis and reduce the load on the pelvic floor. Managing hemorrhoids holistically involves addressing underlying issues that increase rectal pressure, primarily through diet and hydration. Increasing daily fiber intake to around 30 to 35 grams, through foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, helps soften stools. Soft stools prevent straining during bowel movements, which is a major factor in causing hemorrhoids to swell.
Adequate fluid intake, typically six to eight glasses of non-caffeinated fluids per day, is important to ensure fiber works effectively to keep stools soft. Hygiene practices should be gentle; avoid abrasive dry toilet paper and instead use water, a soft cloth, or pre-moistened, fragrance-free wipes for cleaning. This prevents further irritation to the inflamed area.
Non-prescription treatments can provide localized relief for active flare-ups. A sitz bath, involving sitting in a few inches of warm water for 10 to 20 minutes, two to three times daily, helps relax the anal sphincter muscles. This relaxation reduces spasms, soothes irritation, and can temporarily improve blood flow to aid healing. Over-the-counter topical creams containing ingredients like hydrocortisone or witch hazel can reduce itching and pain.
