How Pyrethrin Kills Ants
Pyrethrin acts as a potent neurotoxin, targeting the ant’s central nervous system. When an ant contacts the insecticide, the molecules rapidly penetrate its exoskeleton and travel to the nerve cells. Pyrethrin compounds interfere with the normal function of voltage-gated sodium channels, which transmit nerve signals.
The insecticide binds to these channels, preventing them from closing properly. This causes an uncontrolled influx of sodium ions into the nerve cell, leading to hyperexcitation and continuous firing of electrical signals. The insect quickly loses motor control, resulting in tremors, convulsions, and the characteristic “knockdown effect” of rapid paralysis. This continuous nerve overstimulation ultimately leads to the ant’s death. Safety Profile and Handling Precautions
While naturally derived, pyrethrin is a toxic substance requiring careful handling. Toxicity is generally low for humans because mammals metabolize the compounds efficiently. However, direct contact or inhalation of fine particles should be avoided, and proper ventilation is recommended during indoor application.
A significant concern is pyrethrin’s high toxicity to cats, who lack the specific liver enzymes needed to break down the insecticide quickly.
