The acidity of orange juice also poses a challenge for a sensitive digestive system. Orange juice has a pH ranging from 3 to 4, making it quite acidic. This acidity can irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, exacerbating symptoms like abdominal pain and discomfort.
While whole oranges contain beneficial fiber, the fiber found in juice is less effective or can interfere with the natural gut clearing process during illness. Additionally, unpasteurized orange juice can harbor harmful bacteria, which could worsen an existing gastrointestinal infection. Therefore, due to its sugar content, acidity, and risk of bacterial contamination, orange juice is best avoided during diarrhea.
Effective Hydration During Diarrhea

Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are formulated to replenish water, salts like sodium and potassium, and glucose. The glucose in ORS facilitates the absorption of sodium and water in the small intestine, making it highly effective for rehydration.
Commercially available ORS packets or solutions are recommended because they provide the balance of electrolytes and glucose needed for absorption. These solutions are preferable over plain water alone, as water does not replace lost electrolytes, which are important for the body’s proper functioning.
Aside from ORS, other suitable options for rehydration include diluted broths, which can provide some sodium, and plain water. It is important to avoid beverages that can worsen diarrhea or hinder rehydration. This includes sugary drinks, caffeinated beverages, alcohol, and carbonated sodas, all of which can irritate the digestive tract or contribute to further fluid loss.
Recognizing When to Seek Medical Help
While most cases of diarrhea resolve on their own, certain signs and symptoms indicate a need for medical attention. Dehydration is a concern, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants, young children, and older adults. Signs of dehydration can include reduced urination, such as no wet diapers for three or more hours in infants, a dry mouth and tongue, and sleepiness or irritability.
