The Role of Fiber in Promoting Regularity

The positive influence of orange juice on digestive regularity is tied to its fiber content, which is largely concentrated in the pulp. When oranges are juiced, much of the structural fiber is separated out, but high-pulp varieties retain a beneficial amount. A typical serving of orange juice with pulp may contain between 0.5 and 1 gram of fiber, contributing a small amount toward daily intake goals.

This dietary fiber includes both soluble and insoluble types. Soluble fiber, like pectin, absorbs water in the digestive tract, forming a gel-like substance that softens stool and aids passage. Insoluble fiber adds necessary bulk, stimulating muscle contractions in the intestinal walls to promote regular bowel movements.
