When water becomes trapped in the ear canal after swimming or bathing, the alcohol allows it to evaporate quickly, taking the trapped water with it. This rapid drying action removes the moist environment that is conducive to the growth of infectious microorganisms.

A common home remedy involves mixing isopropyl alcohol with white vinegar in equal parts. The vinegar adds an acidic component, often 5% acetic acid, which helps restore the ear canal’s natural slightly acidic pH barrier against bacterial and fungal proliferation. This combination eliminates moisture and creates an unfavorable environment for pathogens, acting as a powerful preventive measure.

This mixture is generally applied as a few drops after water exposure, and the head is tilted to allow the solution to drain out after a minute or two. Using isopropyl alcohol in the ear is appropriate only when the eardrum is intact and the goal is to dry the outer ear canal. The presence of a perforated eardrum is the most significant contraindication for using any ear drop containing alcohol. If the eardrum is compromised, the alcohol can pass into the delicate middle and inner ear structures. This can cause intense pain, severe irritation, and potentially damage the inner ear, which could result in hearing loss.
