Other signs may include sunken eyes, lack of sweat production, and in infants, a sunken soft spot on the head. These symptoms often precede or accompany significant changes in heart function.

Maintaining proper hydration involves consistent fluid intake throughout the day. Individual fluid needs vary based on factors like activity level, climate, and overall health. A general guideline for adults is to drink enough fluids so that urine is a clear or pale yellow color, often translating to about 2.1 to 2.6 liters daily. Water is the best choice for hydration, but other fluids like milk, juice, and even caffeinated beverages contribute to daily intake. Fruits and vegetables also provide water content.
Increase fluid intake during exercise, in hot weather, or when experiencing illness causing fluid loss, such as vomiting or diarrhea. Drinking before feeling thirsty can help prevent falling behind on fluid replacement. For prolonged physical activity or in hot conditions, sports drinks with electrolytes might be beneficial to replace lost salts, though many contain added sugars.

Certain signs of dehydration warrant immediate medical attention. If severe symptoms like excessive thirst, confusion, fainting, or an inability to keep fluids down persist, seek emergency care.
