An otolaryngologist, often referred to as an ENT, is a medical specialist focused on conditions affecting the head and neck, including the ears, nose, and throat. The thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ situated at the front of the neck below the voice box, produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism, growth, and development. When an ENT is the Right Specialist for Thyroid Issues
Patients are often referred to an ENT when physical symptoms suggest a thyroid abnormality, such as a palpable lump or nodule in the neck. An ENT’s expertise in head and neck anatomy allows for precise evaluation of such masses.
An ENT also becomes the appropriate specialist when an enlarged thyroid, known as a goiter, causes mechanical symptoms. If the goiter compresses the trachea (windpipe) or esophagus, it can lead to difficulty breathing or swallowing. Endocrinologists, who specialize in hormone disorders, often manage the hormonal aspects of thyroid conditions, such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, and regulate thyroid hormone levels with medication.
Radiologists perform and interpret imaging studies, such as ultrasounds, CT scans, or MRI scans of the neck. These provide detailed views of the thyroid gland and surrounding structures, crucial for identifying nodules, assessing their size, and determining their relationship to other neck organs.
Pathologists analyze tissue samples obtained from biopsies to accurately diagnose thyroid lesions.
For patients with thyroid cancer, the ENT surgeon may collaborate with oncologists to plan further treatments beyond surgery, such as radioactive iodine therapy or chemotherapy.
