Managing amlodipine-associated swelling often involves several approaches:
- Elevating the affected limbs, especially the legs and feet, above heart level when sitting or lying down can help reduce fluid accumulation.
- Regular physical activity and simple leg and foot exercises can promote better circulation and help move fluid out of the tissues.
- Wearing compression stockings can help prevent fluid from pooling in the lower extremities by providing external pressure.
- Maintaining adequate hydration is important, as dehydration can sometimes prompt the body to retain fluid.
It is important to discuss any swelling with a healthcare provider. Any adjustments to medication dosage or switching to alternative treatments should only be made under medical supervision. Diuretics, commonly known as water pills, are generally not effective for amlodipine-induced swelling because the swelling is due to fluid redistribution, not excess fluid volume.
