Conversely, values above 7 denote increasing alkalinity. Each whole number change on the pH scale represents a tenfold change in the concentration of hydrogen ions; for example, a pH of 4 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 5.

The pH scale is inversely related to the concentration of hydrogen ions; a higher concentration of H+ ions translates directly to a lower pH value. Common acids illustrate this principle with their characteristic low pH values. Lemon juice, containing citric acid, typically registers a pH between 2 and 3. Vinegar, an acetic acid solution, usually has a pH around 2.4 to 3.4. Stomach acid, primarily hydrochloric acid, maintains an extremely low pH, generally ranging from 1.5 to 3.5, which is necessary for digestion.
How Bases Influence pH
In contrast to acids, adding a base to a solution raises its pH. Bases release hydroxide ions (OH-) or accept hydrogen ions from the solution. When hydroxide ions are introduced, they combine with existing hydrogen ions to form water molecules. This reduces the concentration of free hydrogen ions.
This reduction in hydrogen ion concentration increases the pH, moving the solution towards the alkaline end. Everyday examples of bases include baking soda, which forms a mildly alkaline solution with a pH around 8.3. Soaps, which often contain alkaline compounds like sodium hydroxide, typically have a pH ranging from 9 to 10. Ammonia, a common cleaning agent, is also a base, with its solutions generally exhibiting a pH between 11 and 12.
Why pH is Important
Maintaining specific pH levels is important for many biological and chemical processes. In the human body, for instance, the pH of blood is tightly regulated within a narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45. Deviations outside this range can severely impair bodily functions. The highly acidic environment of the stomach, with a pH of 1.5 to 3.5, is essential for activating digestive enzymes and breaking down food.
pH also influences various natural systems. Soil pH affects nutrient availability for plants; different plants thrive in specific pH ranges, impacting agricultural yields.
