The location of the stroke in the brain is key; for example, damage to the hippocampus can affect the ability to form new memories, while strokes impacting the thalamus may impair attention and memory processing. Strokes that affect the left prefrontal cortex or left posterior temporal lobe can lead to semantic memory deficits, impacting factual information recall.

Stroke severity and type contribute to memory outcomes. Both ischemic strokes (caused by blood clots) and hemorrhagic strokes (caused by bleeding) can result in memory loss. More severe strokes often lead to greater, more lasting memory challenges.

Age is a factor, as older adults often experience a larger decrease in memory function at onset and a faster decline afterward compared to younger individuals. Pre-existing health conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease pathology or small vessel disease, can influence memory impairment and recovery trajectories. Education and social support are protective factors, potentially contributing to cognitive reserve.

Cognitive rehabilitation, often involving speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists, focuses on retraining cognitive functions like memory and teaching compensatory techniques. Practical memory aids can assist in managing daily tasks. These include using calendars, notebooks, or digital reminders for appointments and important information. Establishing consistent routines, keeping frequently used items in the same place, and leaving written notes are helpful. Lifestyle adjustments, such as prioritizing adequate sleep, regular physical exercise, and adopting a brain-healthy diet like the MIND diet, can support cognitive health and recovery.
