Do Some Bees Really Not Have Stingers?

Some bees do not possess stingers, challenging the common perception that all bees can sting. Understanding which bees lack stingers and why offers deeper insight into their diverse biology and behaviors, highlighting the varied ways they interact with their environment and defend themselves.

Bees That Cannot Sting

Male bees, known as drones, are physically unable to sting. This is because the stinger is a modified egg-laying organ, or ovipositor, which is unique to female bees. Drones primarily serve a reproductive role within a colony and do not participate in foraging or defense, though they may attempt to deter disturbances by buzzing or flying at perceived threats.

Another notable group are stingless bees (tribe Meliponini), comprising over 600 species found predominantly in tropical and subtropical regions globally. While they possess a stinger, it is highly reduced and ineffective for defense. Instead, stingless bees employ alternative mechanisms, such as using strong mandibles to bite intruders. Some species secrete caustic chemicals like formic acid or utilize sticky resins to immobilize threats. They also protect their nests, often in tree hollows or underground, by releasing alarm pheromones to recruit more defenders.

The Stinger’s Purpose and Anatomy

The bee stinger evolved from a structure called an ovipositor, which in many insects is used for laying eggs. This evolutionary adaptation explains why only female bees, including worker bees and queens, possess stingers. While the stinger’s primary function in worker bees is defense of the colony, queen bees use their stinger mainly for subduing rival queens rather than defending the hive from external threats.

The bee stinger features a shaft (stylet) flanked by two barbed lancets. When a bee stings, these lancets, driven by muscles, saw into the victim’s skin, injecting venom from an attached sac. Worker honey bees have barbed stingers that typically lodge in mammal skin, leading to the bee’s death as it tears away. This ensures more effective venom delivery and deters the colony. In contrast, queen honey bees and many other bee species, like bumblebees and carpenter bees, have smooth stingers, allowing them to sting multiple times without perishing.

Beyond the Sting: The Ecological Contributions of All Bees

Regardless of their stinging ability, all bees play an important role in maintaining ecological balance, primarily through pollination. Bees are essential for the reproduction of countless plant species, including a substantial portion of the world’s agricultural crops. It is estimated that bees contribute to one out of every three bites of food consumed by humans.

Bees facilitate plant fertilization by transferring pollen between flowers as they collect nectar and pollen, which adheres to their hairy bodies. This process is essential for producing fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, supporting human food systems and natural ecosystems. Stingless bees, despite their small size and ineffective sting, are important pollinators in their native tropical and subtropical habitats. They contribute to the pollination of various crops and are effective even in enclosed agricultural settings like greenhouses. The presence and activity of diverse bee populations, whether stinging or non-stinging, are important for biodiversity and the overall health of our planet’s ecosystems.
