This perceived cooling effect and ready availability contribute to the remedy’s persistence. Some traditional uses suggest potatoes can also help with infection, though this is not scientifically supported for raw applications.
Why Potatoes Aren’t Recommended for Burns
Despite popular belief, medical professionals do not recommend using raw potatoes to treat burns. While a raw potato might feel cool due to its water content, this temporary sensation offers no healing properties. There is no scientific evidence to support raw potatoes’ effectiveness in promoting burn healing or preventing complications. Using potatoes can also delay proper, evidence-based first aid, which is crucial in the immediate aftermath of a burn. This delay can worsen the injury or increase complications. Some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to raw potatoes, exacerbating discomfort. While sterile potato peel dressings are explored in controlled medical environments, these are prepared under strict conditions and are not comparable to applying raw potatoes at home.
