The Initial Pain of an Octopus Bite
An octopus bites with its beak, a hard, sharp structure located at the center of its arms, similar to a parrot’s beak. The immediate sensation can be a sharp pinch or a pricking feeling. This mechanical action can break the skin, resulting in a small puncture wound. Some individuals describe the initial pain as comparable to a bee sting, though it might become more intense over time.
A physical mark, often two small puncture wounds, may be visible at the bite site. Bleeding can occur, and localized pain and swelling might develop around the affected area. The wound may throb, and a clear substance might leak from the injury.
The Role of Venom in Octopus Bites
All octopuses possess some form of venom, which they primarily use to paralyze their prey, such as crabs and bivalves. The potency and effects of this venom vary greatly among species. Most octopus species have venom that is not considered dangerous to humans, or it only causes localized irritation.
A notable exception is the blue-ringed octopus (genus Hapalochlaena), which contains a potent neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX). There is no specific antivenom for blue-ringed octopus bites, and survival depends on immediate supportive medical care, particularly artificial respiration.
Immediate Steps After an Octopus Bite
Clean the wound promptly with fresh water and soap to minimize the risk of infection. Even if the bite seems minor, monitor the site for any signs of worsening pain, swelling, or discolouration. For bites from non-venomous octopuses, applying ice or cool running water can help reduce pain and swelling.
If a blue-ringed octopus is suspected, or if neurological symptoms like numbness, tingling, or difficulty breathing begin, immediate medical attention is necessary. Call emergency services without delay. While awaiting medical professionals, apply a pressure immobilization bandage to the bitten limb, wrapping it firmly from the bite site towards the body. Keep the person as still as possible and be prepared to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if breathing becomes difficult or stops, as respiratory support is important until the venom’s effects subside.
How to Avoid Octopus Bites
Preventing octopus bites involves respecting these animals and their natural environment. Observe octopuses from a safe distance and avoid attempting to touch or handle them. Octopuses are not aggressive towards humans and will bite only if they feel threatened, provoked, or are being handled.
Individuals should refrain from sticking their hands into crevices or holes in rocky areas where octopuses might be hiding. If an octopus approaches, it is out of curiosity; remaining calm and allowing the animal to investigate without sudden movements is recommended. Should an octopus grab onto a person, peeling its suckers away gently can help detach it without causing further distress to the animal or injury to oneself.
