Fire ants are common in many environments, particularly the southern United States. These insects are known for their aggressive behavior and painful encounters with humans and animals. The Fire Ant’s Attack: Bite and Sting Explained

Fire ants use a dual-action defense: both a bite and a sting. First, a fire ant uses its mandibles to grip the skin. This bite secures its position and is not typically the source of pain or venom.

Immediately after gripping, the ant pivots its body and delivers a venomous sting from its abdomen. Unlike many other stinging insects, a single fire ant can sting multiple times, often moving in a circular pattern to inflict several stings. The burning sensation comes directly from the venom injected during the sting, not the initial bite.

Recognizing and Treating Fire Ant Stings

A fire ant sting typically causes immediate, sharp, burning pain, lasting from seconds to several minutes. Within an hour, red welts or bumps with a raised white center appear at the sting sites. These develop into itchy, fluid-filled pustules or blisters within 24 to 48 hours, a unique hallmark of fire ant envenomation.

For most people, treating mild fire ant stings can be done at home. Gently washing the affected area with soap and cold water helps clean the skin and prevent infection. Applying cold compresses can help reduce pain and swelling. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams or oral antihistamines can alleviate itching and rash. It is advised not to break the blisters, as this can lead to secondary bacterial infections or scarring.

Medical attention is important if signs of a severe allergic reaction develop. These can include widespread itching or hives, swelling of the face, eyes, or throat, chest pain, nausea, or difficulty breathing. Such reactions, though rare, require immediate professional care.

Identifying Fire Ants and Their Mounds

Identifying fire ants involves recognizing their physical appearance and the distinctive structures of their nests. Fire ants are small, typically 1/16 to 1/4 inch long, with reddish-brown coloration and often darker abdomens. Unlike some other ant species, worker fire ants within a single colony can vary in size. When their nests are disturbed, fire ants swarm out quickly and climb vertical surfaces to attack.

Their mounds are a primary indicator of their presence. Fire ant mounds are typically irregular, dome-shaped piles of loose soil, ranging from a few inches to over a foot and a half high. A key distinguishing feature is the absence of a visible central entry hole; ants enter and exit through underground tunnels. These mounds are frequently found in open, sunny areas like lawns, pastures, and disturbed soil, and often become more noticeable after rainfall.
