A chipmunk’s burrow system is an intricate network of tunnels and chambers. The entrance hole is typically small, often measuring between 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter, making it inconspicuous. From this initial opening, a main tunnel extends, which can reach impressive lengths, sometimes up to 30 feet long. These tunnels can also descend to depths of up to 3 feet below the surface.
Within this complex system, chipmunks excavate various specialized chambers. A central nesting chamber, often lined with soft materials like dried leaves and grasses, provides space for resting and raising young. Multiple food storage chambers are also common, where chipmunks cache nuts, seeds, and other provisions. Some burrows may include narrow drainage tunnels designed to direct water away from living areas.
Why Chipmunks Dig: Functions of Their Underground Homes
Chipmunk burrows serve multiple functions. These underground homes offer protection from predators like hawks, foxes, and snakes. They also provide refuge from harsh weather conditions, shielding chipmunks from extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Food storage is a primary purpose of their subterranean dwellings. Chipmunks collect and store nuts, seeds, and other food items in designated chambers. This cached food supply is crucial for survival, particularly during colder months when food sources are scarce and they enter periods of torpor. Burrows also function as secure nesting sites where female chipmunks give birth and raise their young; offspring typically remain underground for about six weeks after birth.
Common Locations for Chipmunk Burrows
Chipmunks strategically choose burrow locations that offer cover and proximity to food sources. They frequently dig under natural features like logs, large rocks, and tree roots, which provide structural support and concealment. Areas with dense vegetation or brush piles are also favored spots, offering additional camouflage and protection.
Around human dwellings, chipmunks may construct burrows under sheds, porches, patios, or within stone walls. These environments often provide convenient access to cultivated plants and bird feeders, supplementing their natural diet. Chipmunks generally prefer locations that offer undisturbed soil for digging and readily available cover.
Distinguishing Chipmunk Burrows
Identifying a chipmunk burrow involves observing characteristics that differentiate it from those of other small mammals. The most distinguishing feature is the absence of a visible mound of excavated dirt, or “spoil pile,” around the entrance. Chipmunks carry away the soil in their expandable cheek pouches and scatter it away from the opening, making their burrows less noticeable to predators.
In contrast, mole tunnels often create raised ridges on the surface, and gopher mounds feature distinct piles of dirt. A chipmunk’s burrow entrance is typically a small, neat, circular hole, appearing as a clean opening flush with the ground. These entrances are often hidden beneath leaves, rocks, or other debris, further camouflaging their underground homes.
