Deciduous azaleas, such as native North American species and hybrids like Exbury and Knap Hill, fully shed their leaves in autumn as part of their normal dormancy cycle. These types are completely bare throughout the winter months and are generally the most cold-hardy varieties, capable of surviving temperatures as low as -30°F to -45°F.
Evergreen azaleas, including varieties like the Japanese and Kurume hybrids, are genetically programmed to keep their leaves year-round. These shrubs maintain a significant portion of their foliage through the winter, providing color and structure to the landscape. Even these evergreen varieties naturally drop their older, thinner spring leaves in the fall. The smaller, thicker summer leaves that remain give the plant its characteristic evergreen appearance during the dormant season.
Understanding Semi-Evergreen Behavior
The distinction between the two groups becomes blurred due to a common phenomenon known as semi-evergreen behavior. This status is not a formal classification but describes how certain evergreen varieties respond to environmental stress. In climates with especially cold winters or sudden temperature fluctuations, genetically evergreen azaleas may drop a large percentage of their leaves.
This leaf shedding is a protective response to conserve moisture when the ground is frozen, preventing the roots from taking up water. The plant typically retains the newest leaves clustered around the terminal buds, while shedding the older, larger foliage. This reaction means an azalea labeled “evergreen” might still appear sparse after a harsh winter.
Winter Appearance and Necessary Care
The winter appearance of an azalea differs depending on its type, which dictates the necessary winter care routine. A fully deciduous azalea displays only its woody, brown stems, often revealing the plump flower buds formed the previous summer.
