The presence of these immune cells suggests inflammation and is a common sign of a UTI. The second marker is Nitrite, a compound typically absent in healthy urine.

Nitrites are created when certain types of UTI-causing bacteria convert normal dietary nitrates found in the urine. This conversion serves as a chemical indicator of a high bacterial load. The test strip uses a chemically treated pad that changes color upon contact with either Leukocyte Esterase or Nitrites, providing a visual signal. High doses of Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are known to interfere with the nitrite pad reaction, potentially causing a false negative result. Certain over-the-counter medications containing azo dyes can also alter the urine color and lead to an inaccurate or difficult-to-interpret result.

Regardless of the test outcome, the at-home kit serves only as a screening tool, not a definitive medical diagnosis. If the test returns a positive result for either or both markers, or if symptoms persist despite a negative result, a healthcare provider should be consulted promptly. Only a clinician can order a formal urine culture, which is considered the standard for diagnosing a UTI.
