While removing residue can provide alternative income or resources, complete removal can negatively impact soil health by exposing the soil to erosion and reducing organic matter content.

The selection of a crop residue management approach is influenced by several factors. Soil type influences selection; different soil textures and structures respond uniquely to various tillage intensities and residue levels. For instance, poorly drained soils might benefit from ridge-till to improve drainage, while sandy soils on slopes require higher residue cover for erosion control.

Local climate conditions also guide decisions. In drier regions, retaining surface residue is beneficial for conserving soil moisture by reducing evaporation and increasing water infiltration, leading to increased yields. Conversely, in cold, wet environments, excessive residue can delay soil warming in the spring, potentially affecting planting times and crop emergence.

Crop rotation significantly impacts residue management, as different crops produce varying amounts and types of residue. High-residue crops, like corn or wheat, provide more soil cover, while low-residue crops like soybeans may require complementary practices, like planting cover crops, to maintain adequate residue levels. Rotating crops can also help manage pest and disease cycles influenced by residue presence.

Farm equipment is a practical consideration, as some practices require specialized machinery. No-till or strip-till systems, for example, often necessitate specific planters or drills for high residue levels. Farmers assess current machinery and consider new equipment investments.

Pest and disease pressure influences management choices, as some plant pathogens and insect pests survive or thrive in crop residue. Residue can harbor beneficial organisms, but also provide a habitat for problematic pests or diseases. Integrating pest and disease control strategies with residue management is important.

Economic considerations are also important for farmers. Practices like reduced tillage or no-till farming can lower fuel and labor costs due to fewer field passes. However, costs for specialized equipment or increased herbicide use in reduced tillage systems must be weighed against these savings. Potential for increased yields and reduced input costs through improved soil health also contributes to the economic viability of certain approaches.
