Growing up to 20 feet in length and weighing over 1,000 pounds, the Nile crocodile has armored skin and is agile in water, typically lying submerged while waiting for prey.

In contrast, the hippopotamus is an immense herbivore, with adult males averaging around 3,300 pounds and reaching up to 3.5 tons. Despite their bulk, hippos move surprisingly fast on land and in water. Their formidable jaws open to an impressive 150 to 180 degrees, revealing large canine teeth up to 20 inches long. Hippos use these teeth primarily for territorial defense and in fights with other hippos, not for consuming vegetation. Their bite force, while less than a crocodile’s, is still substantial, estimated between 1,800 and 2,000 psi.

An injured or sick hippo could also become susceptible to a crocodile attack. However, these instances are exceptions, as healthy adult hippos are typically too formidable for a crocodile to consider as prey.
