Calatheas are cherished houseplants, celebrated for their vibrant, patterned foliage. While beautiful, they are susceptible to common houseplant pests. Understanding infestation signs and effective responses helps maintain plant health.

Recognizing Common Calathea Pests

Recognizing specific pests is the first step, as each presents distinct appearances and damage.

Spider mites are tiny arachnids found on leaf undersides, indicated by fine webbing, especially near stems. Infested leaves show tiny discolored spots or stippling, and the plant may appear dull. They thrive in warm, dry conditions.

Mealybugs appear as small, white, cottony masses in leaf axils, along stems, or on leaf undersides. These sap-feeding insects cause stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and sticky honeydew, which can encourage sooty mold.

Scale insects are stationary, resembling small, oval brown or black bumps on stems and leaf veins. Like mealybugs, they excrete honeydew, attracting sooty mold, and severe infestations cause leaf yellowing and decline.

Thrips are slender, tiny insects, often yellow, brown, or black, difficult to spot. They cause silvery streaks or stippling on leaves, with tiny black specks of excrement, and new leaves may emerge distorted.

Fungus gnats are small, dark flying insects hovering around moist soil. Adults are a nuisance, but their larvae feed on decaying organic matter and sometimes delicate roots, harming young or stressed calatheas.

General Pest Management Approaches

Upon discovering pests, immediately isolate the affected plant to prevent spread to other houseplants.

Physical removal significantly reduces pest populations, especially for minor infestations. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove pests like spider mites and mealybugs. Rinse the plant under a gentle water stream to dislodge pests and honeydew. Larger pests can be picked off by hand or with a cotton swab.

Effective Treatment Methods

It is effective against soft-bodied pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of concentrate per gallon of water, or use a pre-mixed product.

Neem oil is an organic pesticide acting as an antifeedant, repellent, and insect growth regulator. It disrupts insect hormonal systems, affecting feeding and reproduction. Dilute 1-2 tablespoons of concentrate per gallon of water, adding mild liquid soap as an emulsifier. Spray thoroughly on all plant surfaces, including leaf undersides. It is effective against a broad spectrum of pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips.

Rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl) effectively spot treats individual mealybugs and scale insects, quickly dehydrating and killing them on contact. Apply directly to visible pests with a cotton swab, avoiding oversaturation. Always test a small, inconspicuous area first and wait 24 hours for adverse reactions. Thorough coverage, especially leaf undersides, is essential. Repeated applications every 5-7 days may be needed until the infestation resolves.

Preventing Pest Problems

Proactive measures minimize future pest infestations. Regular inspection is crucial; early detection allows prompt intervention before populations become severe. Routinely check leaf tops and undersides, stems, and soil for pest activity.

When introducing new plants, quarantine them for two to four weeks. Keep the new plant isolated and monitor for pest issues. This prevents hitchhiking pests from spreading to established plants.

Maintaining optimal growing conditions contributes to calatheas’ health and pest resilience. Consistent humidity discourages spider mites. Proper watering, allowing topsoil to dry slightly, prevents fungus gnats thriving in moist soil.

Good air circulation reduces leaf surface humidity, creating an unfavorable environment. Keeping the plant and surroundings clean by removing fallen leaves and debris deters pests by eliminating hiding spots.
