A 1 to 4-inch layer of organic mulch, such as pine needles, pine bark, or wood chips, helps conserve soil moisture by reducing evaporation. Mulch also moderates soil temperature, protecting sensitive roots from extreme heat and cold. Addressing Root-Related Problems

When the specific needs of blueberry roots are not met, several issues can arise. Nutrient deficiencies are common, often stemming from an incorrect soil pH that prevents roots from absorbing available nutrients. Symptoms like yellowing leaves can indicate iron deficiency, which is a pH problem rather than a lack of iron in the soil. Adjusting soil pH is the primary solution for these nutrient uptake issues.

Root rot is another common problem, caused by poor drainage or overwatering, leading to oxygen deprivation in the root zone. Signs include wilting, stunted growth, and plant decline. Improving drainage and adjusting watering practices are essential to resolving this.
