Leaving Clippings on the Lawn

The simplest and most direct method of recycling grass clippings is a practice known as “grasscycling,” which involves leaving the finely cut material on the lawn surface. This process returns valuable nutrients directly to the soil as the clippings decompose, effectively acting as a natural, slow-release fertilizer. Grass clippings contain roughly 4% nitrogen, 2% potassium, and 0.5% phosphorus, which can significantly reduce the need for synthetic fertilizer applications.

These small pieces of organic matter also help the lawn retain moisture, which is especially beneficial during periods of heat or drought. The clippings shade the soil surface, reducing water evaporation and helping to maintain a cooler root zone for the grass plants. To ensure the clippings decompose quickly without smothering the turf, homeowners should only remove about one-third of the grass blade height during any single mowing session.

Mowing frequently with a sharp blade or a mulching mower helps to create the small pieces necessary for rapid decomposition. If clippings are too long or wet, they can clump together and form a thick layer that blocks sunlight and air, which would ultimately harm the grass underneath. Alternatively, dried clippings can be used as a beneficial mulch around garden beds, trees, or vegetable plants. Applying a layer of dried clippings, typically no more than one to two inches deep, helps to suppress weed growth, regulate soil temperature, and conserve soil moisture.

Avoid using clippings that have been recently treated with herbicides or pesticides, especially near edible plants. Residual chemicals could potentially affect the health of the garden plants or contaminate the food being grown. Allowing the clippings to dry completely before use as mulch helps prevent matting and ensures they function effectively.
