Proper drainage is necessary, so the chosen pot must have multiple drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, which can quickly lead to rot.
The ideal growing medium is a loose, well-draining potting mix that will not compact over the long growing season. Garden soil should be avoided because it becomes too dense in a container, restricting the bulb’s ability to swell. Amending a high-quality potting mix with finished compost or perlite enhances both drainage and nutrient content. Garlic thrives in a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5.
Proper Planting Technique
Select healthy, robust cloves from certified seed stock, opting for either hardneck or softneck varieties based on your climate and preference. Separate the cloves from the main bulb, ensuring the papery skin remains intact, as this protects the clove from disease.
Each clove must be planted with the pointed end facing upward and the flat, root-end facing down into the soil. Plant the cloves about 2 inches deep to provide adequate insulation and stability for the emerging shoot. To allow for proper bulb formation, space the cloves approximately 4 to 6 inches apart within the container. After planting, a thorough initial watering helps settle the soil around the newly placed cloves.
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Garlic requires a location that receives a minimum of six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day to fuel bulb development. The container soil must be kept consistently moist throughout the active growing period, but it should never be saturated or soggy. Monitoring the moisture level frequently is important, often requiring more regular watering.
The plant is considered a heavy feeder, especially during the spring when the foliage is rapidly developing. Applying a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in early spring, once green shoots appear, supports robust leaf growth, which is necessary for energy production. Cease fertilization around mid-to-late spring once the bulb begins to swell, as excessive nitrogen late in the season can hinder proper bulb curing and storage potential. Signaling the Harvest

This natural dieback signals that the plant is redirecting its energy into the bulb, forming the final protective layers of papery skin.
Hardneck varieties produce a curled flowering stalk, or scape, which should be snipped off when it first curls to direct energy back into the bulb. Once the leaves show the appropriate amount of senescence, which typically occurs in early to mid-summer, stop watering completely for about two weeks to encourage the bulbs to firm up. To harvest, use a small trowel or fork to loosen the soil around the bulb before lifting it out. Avoid damage that can compromise its long-term storage. The harvested bulbs must then be cured in a warm, dry, and well-ventilated area for several weeks to prepare them for storage.
